Singapore Prevention and Retardation of Kidney Disease Study (SPARKS)
Progressive Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is associated with development of kidney failure, increased risk of stroke, heart attacks and heart failure (collectively termed cardiovascular complications), increased hospitalisation and death. Each day, there are 6 new dialysis patients in Singapore, and the overall number of dialysis patients has increased by 77% between 2011 and 2021.
Singapore ranks first in the world for diabetes-induced kidney failure rate and ranks third overall highest rate of kidney failure worldwide.
SPARKS aims to:
- Develop a precision medicine approach to better understand the determinants of CKD development and progression in our local population
- Identify, develop and integrate new markers and tools for personalised CKD diagnosis, risk stratification and target identification, such as novel biomarkers and micro-vascular imaging methods,
- Develop and integrate CKD management strategies into population health approaches to effectively organise and deliver healthcare at the individual and system level.
